WEDDING DAY IN TUCSON, ARIZONA:

Like my parents (Charles & Ellen Clock) we went to Arizona to get married. Just the two of us, on 2 May 1975. We flew in to Tucson around midnight, after working in Portland all that day. Got up at sunrise and drove out to the old mission, San Xavier del Bac, “The White Dove of the Desert”. I wanted to see it again, but mostly I just had to be sure that Julie got to see it …all shining in the morning light. Absolutely stunning! It is the coolest building in America …easily.

The mission is about 10 miles out of town. That gave Julie only about 20 minutes to get ready when we got back to the Motel 6, after we had to go by the Pima County Courthouse to pick up our wedding forms. So, we got married at the church on Mountain Avenue that morning in Tucson, with my college buddy and his girlfriend there. Every time we hear the song “Jackson” by Johnny Cash & June Carter, we both have to smile …”We got married in a fever, hotter than a pepper sprout”. Exactly! After our short ceremony, we ate a piece of the little wedding cake that my buddy’ girlfriend made. About an hour later, we ran to the airport and flew out to El Paso. Had our wedding dinner at the Dairy Queen in El Paso …5 tacos for a buck, or something like that. I’ll never forget, someone at the DQ was doing a survey of married couples for a college class. So we filled out the survey on what all we thought of marriage, laughing the whole time. We had been married all of about 4 hours!

The rest of the week, we ran all over New Mexico …Carlsbad Caverns, White Sands, Albuquerque, Tularosa, Santa Fe, Lincoln County, Chama, Taos and every Indian ruin and reservation in the state (there are a whole lot of ’em) …eating Mexican food morning, noon and night the whole way. Then up through Colorado …Mesa Verde, Durango, Silverton, Leadville, Ouray, Buena Vista and saw practically every mining town, Rocky Mountain and ghost town in between. Then flew back to Oregon from Denver.

I worked for Dad, at Clock Associates, in SE Portland another couple of months and Julie was still at First National Bank in NW Portland. Then I got hired to teach at Newport High School …and we were on our way!

THE BEST SONG EVER ABOUT BEING IN LOVE AND STAYING IN LOVE. Perfect! No, we never heard it before Tucson, but we eventually figured it out.

“SOMETHING THAT WE DO”
(sung by Clint Black)

I remember well the day we wed
I can see that picture in my head
I still believe the words we said
Forever will ring true
Love is certain, love is kind
Love is yours and love is mine
But it isn’t something that we find
It’s something that we do.

It’s holding tight, lettin’ go
It’s flying high and laying low
Let your strongest feelings show
And your weakness, too
It’s a little and a lot to ask
An endless and a welcome task
Love isn’t something that we have …
It’s something that we do.

We help to make each other all that we can be
Though we can find our strength and inspiration independently
The way we work together is what sets our love apart
So closely that you can’t tell where I end and where you start
It gives me heart remembering how
We started with a simple vow
There’s so much to look back on now
Still it feels brand-new
We’re on a road that has no end
And each day we begin again
Love’s not just something that we’re in …
It’s something that we do.

We help to make each other all that we can be
Though we can find our strength and inspiration independently
The way we work together is what sets our love apart
So closely that you can’t tell where I end and where you start
Love is wide, love is long
Love is deep and love is strong
Love is why I love this song
And I hope you love it too
I remember well the day we wed
I can see that picture in my head
Love isn’t just those words we said …
It’s something that we do.

There’s no request too big or small
We give ourselves, we give our all
Love isn’t someplace that we fall
…..It’s something that we do.

DUKE & CAESAR ….THE YEAR OF THE BIG SNOW (2003). It snowed 14 inches and then a couple of days later, it snowed another 12 inches on top of it. Then it stayed below freezing for several weeks …that snow lasted nearly a month. And that was our first year up here!! This photo was taken when Julie & I chopped up an old juniper tree for for firewood, a few hundred yards from the house, then pulled it uphill to the house on a sled. It was nearly midnight when we finished. The moon was up and the snow was sparkling all around us, like tiny diamonds. Just like millions and millions of diamonds. I’ll never forget it.

IF THIS ISN’T OUR SONG, THEN I DON’T KNOW WHAT IS!! It’s us exactly. Julie and I waited all day and night in Atlanta, at CountryFest ’96 for Alabama to get in the stage. Finally, about midnight, they did. Then we both (she & I) looked at each other, hoping they would play our song. Well, they did “Give Me One More Shot”, nearly the best song ever about life and tomorrow. Not bad, not bad at all. Then, their final song in the hot humid Georgia night ….”She and I”. I could hardly even sing along, it was so emotional.

“SHE AND I”
(sung by Alabama)

She and I live in our own little world
Don’t worry about the world outside

She and I agree
She and I lead a perfectly normal life
Ah but just because we aren’t often seen socially
People think we’ve got something to hide.
But all our friends know we’re just a little old fashioned
She and I

Oh ain’t that great
Ain’t it fine
To have a love someone that others can’t find
Ain’t it wonderful to know all we ever need is just the two of us
She and I
So wonderful
She and I

She and I share with every body else
The same wants, needs and desires
She and I save
She and I pay on everything we acquire

Ah but just because we aren’t often seen separately
People think we live one life.

Its hard for them to see how anyone could be as close as
She and I.

HOME …McKENZIE CANYON:

SHE & I, on our front porch. (2005)

MOONRISE OVER OUR HOME (October 2011). We’ve been out here for 8 years now. There’s still not a day that goes by, that I don’t see a deer herd or sunrise or the mountain and stop & think, “Isn’t that something.”

SEE WHAT I MEAN? Sunset & Mt Jefferson, from our place near Sisters, OR.

“We never grow tired of each other …the mountain and I.” -from an old Chinese poem

OUR PLACE FROM THE AIR. (2006). Our neighbor has an airplane. No, it’s not THAT kind of “neighborhood”. ha

DEER CHECKING OUT OUR BIRD FEEDER, right next to the house. They are up here ALL the time. And turkeys, elk, coyotes, eagles and hawks, sometimes, too.

SPRING TIME

SPRING WILDFLOWERS

McKENZIE CANYON VIEW, FROM OUR PLACE UP ON THE RIMROCK.

“In beauty, I walk
Beauty before me, I walk
Beauty above me, I walk
Beauty below me, I walk

In beauty, I walk
To the direction of the rising sun, in beauty, I walk
To the direction traveling with the sun, in beauty, I walk
To the direction of the dippers,
In beauty, I walk

All around me my land is beauty,
In beauty, I walk
-Navaho Chant

I can’t possibly count the number of times those words have gone through my mind and passed my lips when I’ve gone hiking in so many different places. But especially here, on this place of ours in McKenzie Canyon. They are the best words ever written about the outdoors!

UTAH:

THE POOL AT LITTLE AMERICA HOTEL & BARRY …SALT LAKE CITY. (2009)

WASATCH MTS, ABOVE SALT LAKE CITY. We’ve been to Utah SO many times since 1980 …perhaps 25 times. With our kids, then sometimes on our own, and now with our grandkids. We went all over the state, but this is the view that always stays in my mind. Driving Foothills Blvd at first light. I have driven up into the mountains …up Big Cottonwood Canyon, Mill Creek Canyon and Little Cottonwood Canyon, countless times at day break, mostly to go hiking. With the aspens, peaks, lakes, wildflowers and rushing creeks all around. Absolutely outstanding!! Sometimes I’ll hit my knees, on the trail. Because it is so pretty that I can’t stand it. Anyway, this is the view that sticks in my mind when we’re not in Utah. I can’t get enough. Lots of things make Salt Lake America’s best city …but for me it’s them mountains. And they’re just right there!

NOW THAT IS A GOOFY DOG! KENZIE IN THE SNOW AT OUR PLACE. You can call her and she still won’t come in. Not when there is snow out and it’s dark. Just like Caesar, he would lay out there til he practically disappeared under the falling snow. Oh, if you’ve never had a malamute …they are something else!

————-

NIGHT TIME & OUR LOG CABIN. Once and a while a friend or relative will ask, “Don’t you get lonely out here?” And I’ll think, “You don’t have any idea at all what it’s like to live out here do you?” But I don’t say it. We have the sunsets and the chickadees and the hawks and the wildflowers and the deer and our dog and stars like you wouldn’t believe. Our dogs. And we have each other. Now who would want more than that?

IS THIS THE GREATEST SONG EVER WRITTEN …At least for parents and grandparents? Yup!

“JUST WATCH YOUR MOMMA & ME”

by Waylon Jennings

You are my children, my gifts to the world, you are the lights of my life.
You all have your good hearts, you have your own strengths, so I know you’ll all do alright.
As I look to the future from this day in time, the truth is I don’t have a clue,
There are modern day wonders I don’t understand, so I’ll leave that all up to you.

But if you want to learn how to dance, just watch your mama and me,
Just a good ol’ boy and his lady, nothin’ too fancy to see.
If you want to be happy, just watch your mama and me.

There are so many changes, changing too fast, things I know nothing about.
Some things remain, just stay the same, and that’s where I might help you out.

So if you want to learn how to dance, just watch your mama and me,
Just a good ol’ boy and his lady, nothin’ too fancy to see.
If you want to be happy …. just watch your mama and me.
